Why REI Still Feels Like Home: From Tech Shirts to Tuning Skis

Before I was running boats in the Caribbean or carving through snow-covered trees in Utah, I was just a kid wandering around the REI in my hometown—Reading, Massachusetts.

I didn’t always have money to spend, but something about walking through those aisles just felt right. Gear hanging on the walls, boots you could imagine breaking in, tents set up like mini dream homes. I’d kill time just being there.

And it wasn’t just me. Two of my best friends worked there, and eventually, I did too—tuning skis and snowboards as a tech in the back shop.

That First “Tech Shirt” Changed Everything

The first legit piece of gear I ever bought with my own money? A moisture-wicking shirt. I think it was CoolMax, though I can’t swear to it. What I can tell you is—it was a total game changer.

Suddenly I wasn’t soaked in sweat halfway up a trail or freezing after a quick rest. That one shirt opened the door to what real outdoor gear could do. After that, I was hooked.

Why REI Still Has My Loyalty

Years later, I’ve been through every kind of terrain—snow, salt, rain, sun—and REI’s still a go-to for a few big reasons:

  • Gear That Works
From base layers to bear cans, they carry stuff I trust.
  • The Membership
That dividend check has bailed me out more than once.
  • Staff Who Get It
I used to be one of them. These folks aren’t pushing sales—they’re out there using the gear.
  • The Sales
Their clearance racks and seasonal deals are straight-up dangerous to my wallet.

From Reading, MA to the Rockies

Even here in Utah, I still find myself scrolling through REI’s online store—or wandering the Salt Lake City location—looking for a mid-layer or eyeing new packs when I’m supposed to be working. Old habits die hard..

But honestly? REI never felt like just a store. It felt like possibility. Like the start of the next trip.

My Favorite REI Co-op Gear Picks

Over the years, I’ve used a bunch of REI’s house-brand gear, and a few pieces really stood out and now they are all updated and modern. Durable, practical, and not overhyped—just solid gear that does its job.

  • REI Co-op Active Pursuits T-Shirt – Men’s & Women’s
Lightweight, moisture-wicking, and fits like it’s actually made for movement. It’s basically the upgraded cousin of my old CoolMax shirt. Great for hikes, shuttles, or sweaty mountain days.
  • REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Tent with Footprint
Slept in this thing through rain, wind, and one ridiculous lightning storm in the Sierras. Easy setup, solid ventilation, and plenty of space without feeling bulky.
  • REI Co-op Ruckpack 40 Pack – Men’s & Women’s
This pack is one of the most versatile pieces I’ve owned. Perfect for weekend trips, gear hauls, and even stuffing groceries into if you’re in mountain town survival mode.

Try It for Yourself

If you’re new to the outdoor scene, REI is one of the easiest doors to walk through.

If you’ve never walked into an REI, do it. Don’t overthink it—just go. Touch some gear. Ask a question. Remember that outdoor life isn’t about having the perfect setup—it’s about getting out there, however you can. You don’t have to be an ultralight fanatic or a weekend warrior—just curious. Just looking. Just getting started.

And if you’re already deep into the game, you know the deal. That next piece of gear is always out there waiting to earn its place in your pack.
